Reading from Home & A Virtual Trip to the Zoo
I hope you’ve had enjoyed the sunshine this week with your family and done little bits of work here and there.
I think we need to give our mams, dads and everyone who’s looked after us this week a huge round of applause They have done an amazing job!
Only one my week left and then it’s the Easter break
Earlier this week some parents were asking for reading books / resources for their children… sorry it’s taken so long but I’ve been looking for good sites with age appropriate books on as well as finding ideas for what you could do with the children with your own books that may be too advanced for them at the moment. I will put the list below.
As a Friday treat why not have a trip to the zoo? Let’s all go on a class visit to Chester Zoo – I have sent attached details of the virtual zoo visit starting at 10am. – head over to their Facebook page to get the link
Have a wonderful weekend and I’d you need anything you know where I am, keep the photos and emails coming keeping me updated with the fun things your doing, and keep checking out the YouTube channel!
See you soon,
Some great site with reading books online for children to read with an adult:
Reading ideas for reception / year 1 / year 2 children:
Activity 1- get a book (story or reading book) pick a word and have a race as to who can find it first on that page.
Activity 2- find a word in the book and see how many words you can make rhyme with it, model writing them down or if your child is able let them write them.
Activity 3- play I spy with the pictures in the book use the soft sound not the letter. I spy with my little eye something beginning with S ‘ssss’.
Watch jolly phonics on you tube phase 2 and 3 sounds to help you with pronouncing it if unsure.
Activity 4- write some key phrases from the story on paper and cut them into strips. Can your child read and order the events. (Or photocopy pages from the book and order them)
Activity 5- pick your favourite character from the story if you could ask them any question what would you ask them? What do you think they would say?
Activity 6- Tell a story together my turn, your turn.
You-Once upon a time there was
You- He lived in
You-One day he decided to
Activity 7- read a story book to your child and get them to follow the text as your reading with their index finger.
Activity 8-tricky word (words children should know by sight as they cannot be sounded out phonetically) snap. Write down two sets of tricky words on scrap paper and divide them into two piles. Play snap.
Phase 2 tricky words-I,no,go,to,the
Phase 3 tricky words-he,she,we,me,be,was,you,they,are,all,my,her
Activity 9- read a simple story or traditional tale. Ask your child to draw and label a picture to explain what happens at the beginning then middle and end and put them in order.
Activity 10- pick a word or picture from the book and see how many describing words you can think of for example a cloud- fluffy, white, soft, large, like Cotten balls, as big as a snowman etc
Activity 11- hide the book from your child’s sight and describe the setting/scene to your child and get them to draw it. When they are finished compare the setting to your child’s drawing discuss how they are different. Can they describe it to you and you can draw it.
Before reading a new book you can also get your child to predict what will happen by looking at the title and front cover.
Whilst reading a book you can ask the children questions, for example ‘what do you think is going to happen next?’, or ‘how do you think she is feeling now?’
EYFS Home Learning
Joe Wicks has revealed he will be running virtual PE classes to make sure kids are keeping fit from home as schools close for the foreseeable future amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Body Coach, 33, told his followers he would be leading classes kids can do from their homes to make sure they are still getting some exercise. He said on Twitter: ‘Hello everybody, I’m Joe Wicks – The Body Coach and I’ve got an exciting announcement to make. ‘Starting Monday, every single day from Monday to Friday I’m going to do a live workout called PE with Joe on my Youtube Channel, TheBodyCoachTV. ‘It’s a workout specifically designed for kids because when the schools are closed there is no PE. Don’t worry, I’ve got you – I’m going to take this over. ‘I’m going to get your kids moving, feeling energised, positive, optimistic. So, tune in Monday morning 9am and every day Monday to Friday.
Summer 1 EYFS Home Learning Pack – In light of the emergency closure of the school, Classroom Secrets have provided learning packs that can be used at home.
School closure is also a time for your child to create a project around an area that they are really interested in. They could research the topic and report their findings. They could make a short film, design a set of revision cards to share with their friends. They could make a model, write a song or poem linked to the topic!
It could also be a time to get your very own Blue Peter Badge- see the link for more information!
