Hello,Mental Health Awareness Week happens each year in May and is an ideal time for us all to think about mental health, tackle stigma, and discuss how we can create school environments that protect our mental wellbeing.The week is based around a different theme each year, and previous themes have included nature, kindness, and body image. It is hoped that as many people as possible will have conversations about mental health and the everyday things that can affect it.Our mental health clearly links to Article 24 but many of the other rights that children and young people are entitled to, also contribute to good mental health. Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check Presentation Information for Parents/Carers held on 27.4.23

What is the Year 4 multiplication tables check?

The multiplication tables check is an online test for pupils in Year 4. Pupils are asked to answer 25 questions on times tables from two to 12. They are given six seconds per question, with three seconds rest between each question, so the test should last less than five minutes. It is very similar to the set-up of Times Tables Rock stars.

Questions about the six, seven, eight, nine, and 12 times tables are likely to come up most often, as these are the hardest for most children to learn. It’s a good idea to focus on these tricky times tables with your child.

First and foremost, the check is about finding out which children are struggling with their times tables so that they can get extra support. It is not a judgement on what your child can do, but a way for the school to know how their teaching is going and to adjust their focus if needed.

When is the check going to happen?

The next trial of the times tables check, open to all schools that want to take part, will take place between 5th–23rd June 2023. Our school participated in the trial and if your child is in Year 4, then they took the test.

By June 2020, every school will be required to take part in the check by law.

Hello,Article 39 – Recovery from Trauma and Reintegration – has not been covered so far in this series. Conversations about the support needed to recover from the trauma of neglect, abuse, exploitation or torture have to be covered with the utmost sensitivity in class.Despite being a difficult article to cover, we would urge you to incorporate the activities in this pack, where you can and in a way that is appropriate to the context of your learners. As duty bearers, adults have an obligation to let children and young people know about the Convention (Article 42) and that includes the harder, more emotionally difficult articles.We strongly recommend covering these activities in class under the supervision of a teacher and not setting this pack, or activities in this pack, as homework. We would also recommend considering the situations your learners may bring with them into this discussion and have support and safeguarding in place.

And in these circumstances several articles of the Convention can help guide everyone to ensure that the child or young person’s best interests remain central to the decisions taken.In this pack we link four articles which closely relate to a child’s situation when a decision is made that results in them being cared for by people other than their parents. However, there are many other articles that could apply.We understand that this topic can be difficult for young people with experience of adoption and the care system, so please do take into account the situation of your learners before you proceed with activities from this pack.

Due to the nature of this topic we have separated out content in this pack into primary and secondary sections, each with their own short video.This week’s topic needs to be handled sensitively. We would urge you to consider safeguarding procedures in your school and we would strongly recommend completing the activities in class, under the guidance of a teacher, and not setting this pack, or individual activities, as homework.While conversations around Article 35 can be difficult or painful, it is important when educating about children’s rights to explore the Convention as a whole in line with the obligation of duty bearers to ensure that children have knowledge of all of their rights (Article 42).
