History
Let’s find out about famous Roman gladiators today.
https://www.historyforkids.net/roman-gladiators.html
Who Were Gladiators: Gladiators were combatants who fought against each other, condemned criminals and wild animals during the time of Roman Republic and Roman Empire. They were armed with deadly weapons and in most cases fought till either one of them accepted defeat or was killed fighting. Gladiators fought for the entertainment of Rome’s rich and mighty and also for public.
People thronged the arenas to watch gladiator games and it may sound appalling to a modern man, but gladiator fighting was a popular sport in Rome, just like soccer is today. Roman people enjoyed sight of blood and carnage. They built amphitheatre’s like ‘The Colosseum’, where gladiator games were held regularly and were witnessed by excited crowds who cheered for their favourite fighters just like we cheer our favourite sportsmen and teams today.

This is a Viking dragon ship. I am sure you remember all about them from our Traders and Raiders topic. These large long ships had the heads of dragons or other mythical creatures carved in their wooden prows. The Vikings believed the dragon heads would scare off the enemies.
Imagine this was a caption for a museum exhibit:
This is a Viking ship. It is very old. It is made of wood.

Let’s do our 7 times tables today!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks2-maths-the-7-times-table-with-moonbeam/zjp8y9q
It’s mental maths day. Remember all your different strategies.
Rounding numbers
Rounding numbers to the nearest 1, 10 or 100 can help with lots of mental maths problems.
- To add 9 to another number, add 10 and then subtract 1: 36 + 9 = 36 + 10 – 1 = 45
- To add 18 to another number, add 20 and then subtract 2: 48 + 18 = 48 + 20 – 2 = 66
- To add 97 to another number, add 100 and then subtract 3: 439 + 97 = 439 + 100 – 3 = 536
- To add 0.9 to another number, add 1 and then subtract 0.1: 3.7 + 0.9 = 3.7 + 1 – 0.1 = 4.6

Breaking down numbers
Breaking down numbers can help you add or subtract in your head. For example: find the difference between 38 and 63.
- Count on from 38 to 40 and keep that 2 in your head.
- Now count on from 40 to 60, which is 20.
- Finally count from 60 to 63 which is 3.
- Add them together: 2 + 20 + 3 = 25

Pretend that someone else wrote the story, see how well you think the story is written and then rewrite it to make it better.
-
Use conjunctions to make sure your sentences flow nicely and make sense.
-
Double-check your facts.
-
Look out for spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes.
-
Look for words or sentences that you can make better by choosing different vocabulary, adding description or adding adverbs.

Geography
Today you are going to find out about the differences and similarities between Italy and Britain. Looking at climate, landscape, size and weather.
Italy is easy to recognize on any world map, as the country is shaped like a high-heeled boot, as you can see on the map above. It looks like the boot is kicking a ball, which is the island of Sicily, don’t you think?
The country is slightly larger in size than the three countries of the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium combined or about as big as the state of Arizona/USA.

Homophones
Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. They also have different spellings. These are some homophones that often confuse people:
- ‘here’ eg “put it down here” and hear eg “Speak louder, I can’t hear you”
- ‘see’ eg “it’s so dark, I can’t see anything” and ‘sea’ eg “let’s go swim in the sea”
- ‘be’ eg “will you be my friend?” and ‘bee’ eg “the bumble bee was on the flower”

PE timetable for this week – active at home
We all know the benefits of being physically active .
When times are tough and it is difficult to get outdoors, it
can be quite tricky to come up with ideas to keep the
children occupied and active.
With modern technology, there are numerous websites
available to support physical activity at home; not just for
children, but for the whole family.
Most activities only take around 5-30 minutes to complete,
so it can fit easily into the day.
Here are some ideas and resources we think you might find
useful placed in a weekly activity timetable. You can adapt
the timetable to suit your own needs!
If you have any further activities you recommend, please let
us know and we can share them with everyone else.

Good morning everyone. I hope you are all ok. Mrs Gallacher sends her love and we miss you all!
SPAG
This morning we are practicing the possessive apostrophe.
How to use a possessive apostrophe
An apostrophe can be used to show that one thing belongs to or is connected to something. This is called a possessive apostrophe.
Let’s take a look at some examples.
The cat’s tail was fluffy.
Cat is a singular noun so you need to add an apostrophe and “s” to show that the tail belongs to the cat.
Charles’ cat was naughty.
Charles is a singular noun that ends in an “s”, so you need to add an apostrophe to show that the cat belongs to Charles.
The brothers’ feet were muddy.
Brothers is a plural noun that ends in an “s” so you don’t add another “s” after your apostrophe. You can just add an apostrophe to show the feet belongs to the brothers.
The children’s toys were broken
Children is a plural noun but it doesn’t end with an “s” so you need to add an apostrophe and “s” to show that the toys belong to the children.
Watch this video to help you.
