Year 6 Leavers 2020
Summer Term 2
Welcome back everyone to what is, believe it or not, the last half term to a unique year at Nettlesworth Primary School.
This term, we will be looking into the future with our Cornerstones Curriculum topic – Tomorrow’s World.
Text messages, emails, websites, blogs and podcasts – there are so many ways to communicate! Our children will experience how to set up a class blog and build a homepage on a subject of their choice. We will suggest ways of improving our school’s website and we will approach Mrs. Lee with our ideas of improvement!
We will discover the movers and shakers in the world of technology – the people who have shaped the modern world; perhaps one of us will become a visionary for the next generation!
Please have a look at the information below, and let’s start today on Tomorrow’s World…
I can’t wait to see what you come up with whilst working at home with your loved ones. Please remember to email me with examples of your work; I have loved the pieces people have sent in so far.
Remember to keep working hard, stay safe and enjoy.
I can’t wait to see you all.

Year 6’s School Lock-down Journals
Ava
On Monday 15th June, Alisha, Emily, Jia and I arrived at school – we hadn’t been there since March! Outside stood Mr. Graham, Mrs Henderson and Mrs. Shaw; they walked us through the corridor to our original classroom, however it looked very different. The tables were 2m apart – don’t worry, we were following the rules! We washed our hands thoroughly (20 secs) and headed to our desks. I was really happy that we could come back to school and reunite with some of my friends.
First we talked about what we did during lock-down and I was talking about my birthday (May 31st); after we were given a sheet about what we did!
During our time in school, we have been doing PE with Darren – he said that he goes to Durham Federation, so I might see him there! I loved doing work about Street Child; English is my favourite subject! The formulae maths was quite challenging because there were 2 steps, but I remembered BIDMAS; we also did RE Sikhism and I loved it!
I wish I could stay but sadly I have to go to secondary school. I can’t wait for the Year 6 Leaver’s Assembly! I will be sure to visit the school as often as can be; it will be easy because I live across the road!
Alisha
On the 15th June, Ava, Jia, Emily and myself came back to school (Damien came back on the 22nd). I felt so excited and relieved to get back to school and learning like normal.
On the Monday, we all came into school and lined-up (2 metres apart) outside the school gate – I was so happy to see Ava. In the first couple of days, I already filled my first book as we did so much work!
We had a calendar with different activities to do. My favourite piece of work would be where we drew the person we admired the most, and wrote why they inspired us. I drew Davis Attenborough – he’s amazing. I was extremely proud of it!
I really enjoyed coming back to school and seeing my teachers and friends the most; I loved being back. I was also really impressed with my Origami, although it was very challenging!
Jia
Coming back to school was great! At home, I was excited about going back to school to see my teacher (Mr. Graham) and the people in my class – it has been an extraordinary experience being back.
At school, we have been learning about different topics in each subject. In science, we have been learning about: Inheritance; Evolution; Adaption and Fossils. We learnt more knowledge in Literacy – I found complex sentences challenging, but interesting because they have a lot of detail and you could add anything you wanted to the sentence!
The work I am most proud of is RE because I am proud of the presentation of my work I produced. In addition, I was really proud of my Origami because I find Origami interesting and relaxing – sometimes challenging!
Now, I think everything is going along nicely because we got to know everyone more and how we feel everyday.
Damien
On 22nd June when I came back to school, I was confused even though I knew why we had to use the hand sanitiser at the door, but I was happy because school has been a lot more fun compared to before lock-down! We have completed a variety of work in the last 4 weeks, my favourite being science (Evolution).
The most challenging lesson was Origami – the Japanese art of folding paper – because I fell behind and lost track of the instructions; I forgot what I needed to do next!
I am proud of my work on Sikhism and Evolution on Fossils, and our ancestors because recently, I have been interested in ancient creatures so I knew a lot!
Emily
On the 15th June 2020, lock-down went down a little so if we wanted, we could come back to school. When I came back, I felt excited but scared at the same time! In school, we have been doing TT Rockstars on the iPad and taking photos of plants so we could do a pic-collage. we have done lots of numeracy and literacy and Evolution in Science.
I have really enjoyed making a logo for different shops, as well as seeing my teachers and friends. My favourite lesson was Evolution in Science because it was good fun!
I have found social distancing challenging in school, because we can’t go to all the places we would normally do. There are lots of stickers and posters and hand sanitisers around to help us and keep us clean and safe.

Learning Log
Summer 1 Year 5/6 Home Learning Pack.In light of the emergency closure of the school, Classroom Secrets have provided learning packs that can be used at home.
School closure is also a time for your child to create a project around an area that they are really interested in. They could research the topic and report their findings. They could make a short film, design a set of revision cards to share with their friends. They could make a model, write a song or poem linked to the topic!
It could also be a time to get your very own Blue Peter Badge- see the link for more information!
Mr. Graham
Geography – Frozen Planet
UNCRC Article 17 (access to information from the media)
What a brilliant geography lesson we had today. We explored the similarities and differences between 2 Polar Regions (Arctic and Antarctic); we compared plantations, people, animals and weather – we even had a group of children comparing both Polar Regions with the UK!
We relied on the internet to supply the information necessary, along with information cards supplied by our Cornerstones Curriculum.
Well done everyone.
Scientific Enquiry (Electricity)
UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)
What an excellent science lesson we had today when we were faced with the question…What happens to the brightness of the bulb when more wires are added to the circuit?
We had to design our own lines of enquiry, ensuring that we adhered to a fair test; we created our own results tables, predicted and concluded our findings. We even drew circuit diagrams to show which tests we carried out.
Well done everyone.
Cornerstones Memorable Experience – Frozen Planet
UNCRC Article 31 (cultural, artistic activities)
What a fabulous way to introduce our new Cornerstones Curriculum for this half term – Frozen Planet.
Class 4 welcomed Class 1 and 2 to share their experience when we observed what an actual iceberg looked like…
How are icebergs formed?
Where would you find them?
Which part of the iceberg melts the quickest; above or below the waterline?
What happens to the ice berg when salt is sprinkled on top?
Why can I see bubbles inside the iceberg?
The children had a wonderful time touching and observing the icebergs, and were memorised how it actually melted. What a memorable experience; we can’t wait to start our topic now!
Cornerstones Curriculum Showcase Event
UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)
Well done to everyone associated with our school today – we welcomed our family and friends into our classrooms to showcase all the lovely work we have been doing over the course of the half term on our topic – Off With Her Head.

Mr. Graham was very impressed with the level of peer and self assessment that was going on!
Well done everyone.
Forest School
UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)
What a fabulous afternoon we’ve all had; spending valuable time enhancing our outdoor skills during a Forest School session with Miss Grant – our very own Forest School expert. After our initial safety briefing and expectations for the session, all our children completed a nature awareness activity, identifying different types of plantations and animals that live within specific habitats, we were all then sent to find appropriate sticks that could be used to build a fire. We graded the wood that was collected, then made ‘waffle’ fires using flint and steel to ignite. To celebrate our work, we cooked marsh-mellows over the open fire!
Well done everyone.
DT Sculptures
UNCRC Article 31 (cultural, artistic activities)
We are delighted with the way our 3D sculptures of Henry VIII have turned out; the Cornerstones Curriculum (Off With Her Head) has been fabulous this half term. All that’s left to do now is to evaluate it!
Well done everyone.
PE – Dance – SSCo
UNCRC Article 31 (cultural, artistic activities)
Today, we were very lucky to welcome Gemma (a member of the School Sports Coordinator Programme) into our school. We practised a range of dance moves, individually, in pairs, small groups and as a whole class. Gemma was also able to watch the whole class dance we’ve been working on in lessons, and offered enhancements to improve it – all in preparation for our performance at the Gala Theatre on 24th March. Please remember that parents are able to spectate at this event (ensure you have your tickets – from the box office).
Thank you Gemma; we all had a super morning.
Showcasing our talents
We are incredibly proud of Poppy who has completed another dancing examination with a Merit. Well done Poppy on an unbelievable achievement.

Our street dance is progressing nicely; we have split ourselves into our teams, and are currently creating movements to specific age categories (children; teens; parents; OAPs). Hopefully you will be able to identify our groups when we perform our dance.
Art – Hans Holbein
UNCRC Article 31 (cultural, artistic activities)
We are all loving our Cornerstone’s Curriculum topic this half term – Off With Her Head. The Tudors were definitely an interesting bunch!
We’ve taken inspiration from one of Henry VIII’s royal artists today (Hans Holbein) and began sketching portraits of Henry VIII and his 6 wives. A great start we have made…watch-out for our updated portraits.
Design and Technology
UNCRC Article 31 (cultural and artistic activities)
Another project is started…I just love to see how well our children work as part of a team; the encouragement, patience, teamwork and desire to succeed are qualities all our children show on a daily basis. Well done again Class 4.

Finally our finished sculptures from last term’s design technology – Hola Mexico. We’re very proud of how they have progressed into bright pieces of art, as well as the intricate details on all our efforts.
Cornerstones Memorable Experience – Adam Bushnell
UNCRC Article 31 (cultural, artistic activities)
What a unique and fabulous way to introduce our new Cornerstones Curriculum for this half term – Off With Her Head.
We welcomed a popular children’s author into school who delivered a series of workshops for all our classes throughout school. The children of class 4 enjoyed listening to stories based on the Tudors, as well as writing and drawing illustrations based on Tudor Family Shields. What a memorable experience.

UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)
Welcome back Class 4 and we’re straight in at the deep-end with our new PE sport; Street Dance. We are all learning to freestyle to modern dance music in preparation for the upcoming Dance Festival on March 24th 2020. Some fabulous teamwork, encouragement and leadership on show this week – well done everyone.
Christmas Party
UNCRC Article 31 (leisure, play and culture)
What a wonderful way to finish the Autumn Term and our festive period with our own Christmas Party and disco. There was lots of dancing and, games and treats for all to enjoy; even the teachers joined in the dancing!
Have a wonderful Christmas and a joyous New Year – from all of us in Class 4.
Christingles
UNCRC Article 14 (freedom of thought, belief and religion)
What a lovely session the children from Class 4 had today learning about the true Christian meaning of each element that makes up the Christingle. Using an orange, fruits and sweets, red ribbon, a candle and tooth picks, the children were able to derive a deeper understanding of how Christians see Jesus as the Light of the World. We are all now looking forward to our Christingle Service tomorrow.

Design and Technology – Sculptures
UNCRC Article 31 (artistic activities)
Our children just love getting ‘messy hands’! Over the course of this half term, we have been designing our own Maya Skulls, using our design knowledge on how we could construct them. Today, after deciding to use papier mache, we got to manufacture our designs; what a mess – lovely!
Basketball
UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)
Another fabulous coaching session today with our basketball coaches – Betsy and Molly; we really are ready for our competitive festival next week. Today we were enhancing our offensive and defensive skills, with and without the ball.
Gymnastics
UNCRC Article 31 (leisure, play, culture)
What another outstanding lesson Class 4 had today in PE; after prior learning opportunities to develop our balances, rolls and different forms of travelling, the children created their own sequence consisting of 8 elements in total. With their partner, each pairing coached and performed their sequence, as well as recording for enhancement. Well done Class 4.
Class 4’s Crisis Sleepover
UNCRC Article 27 (adequate standard of living)
The children from Class 4 experienced what it would be like to be homeless last night as they raised awareness for the charity Crisis. During our sleepover, we were able to: build shelters using only materials that could be found on the streets; sample soup, hot dogs and hot chocolate from the soup kitchen; make clothing out of scrap materials, as well as meet some homeless children!
We are very proud of all our children, who managed to brave a ‘night on the street’ (in the school hall) – even Mrs. Lee, Mr. Graham and Mrs. Aspinall braved the evening!
Well done everyone.

What a fabulous day our Year 5 and 6 children had at the Durham Federation Transitioned Themed day. Everyone was welcomed into the auditorium and briefed to the mysterious murder that had occurred during the previous night at Dunsinane Castle; but one question – who did it?
It was the job of our children to turn detective, analysis the evidence, question the suspects and derive their own conclusions, whilst writing the front page of their newspaper story.
Once again, our children’s behaviour was exemplary and we are all very proud of your efforts. Well done class 4…and well done to the staff of Durham Federation for you efforts in organising a wonderful day for all children who attended.

Well done Class 4, your behaviour and attitude to learning was exemplary; we are all very proud of you.

What a superstar we have on our hands…
Olivia achieved 2 rosettes for her fabulous horse riding skills in a recent competition. Keep up the good work Olivia; we’re all very impressed.
Cycle Workshops
Class 4 enjoyed a cycle workshop today where we learned the various parts to our bikes and how we should maintain them in order to stay safe. We worked as part of a team to see how far we could peddle in 5 minutes; this was surprisingly very tiring!
We also took our own bikes outside onto the playground to practise some basic manoeuvres.
A super session enjoyed by all.

Junior Road Safety Coffee Morning
UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)
Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.
Over the last term, our children have developed their health and safety awareness through the Junior Road Safety scheme; four children within our class were selected as Junior Road Safety Officers and these children have participated in assemblies and ran competitions to design a road safety banner – the winning entry to be erected on the school’s perimeter fence. On Friday (3.5.19), we welcomed parents, Governors, friends and the Local MP Kevan Jones to our Junior Road Safety Coffee Morning to showcase our work.
Well done Alfie for your winning banner.
Our children also enjoyed learning about how the police tackle road safety awareness issues with a visit from a response car.
Police Response Unit
UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)
Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.
Our children today had the opportunity to visit the Police Response Unit in Durham and sample what goes on behind the scenes when an emergency 999 call occurs, and sampled the roles and responsibilities of the various teams that work within the response unit. The children were also introduced to a Police Response Vehicle, and were able to look at the vehicle’s kit and its uses.
Once again, our children were an absolute credit to our school, and it’s fair to say we could have some future police officers in our class.

Hindu Temple
UNCRC Article 14 (freedom of thought, belief and religion)
Every child has the right to think and believe what they choose and also to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights.
Our children today had the opportunity to visit the Hindu Temple in Newcastle where we learned that Hinduism is over 4,000 years old and is the oldest religion in the world. We discovered that Hindus believe in one God, Brahman, but the millions of qualities that Brahman has are represented by many different gods and goddesses. The Hindu Priest told us that going to worship at a shrine is like visiting the gods and goddesses, and the Hindu Temple is the centre for the community and worship. When a Hindu enters the Temple to pray, they ring a bell to awaken god, then bow and pray to the statues to ask for help or to thank them.
We met Shiva – the creator; the monkey god Hanuman – for strength; Ganesh the elephant god – for intelligence; 3 of many gods within the Temple. We even joined in with the Puja (Hindu prayer).
We all had a superb at the Hindu Temple, and the Priest has welcomed us all back anytime.
