Cornerstones Curriculum Summer Term 2 – Class 5

I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing half-term and are ready for the next 7 weeks. During the Summer 2nd half term in Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our next topic – Tomorrow’s World!

Text messages, emails, websites, blogs and podcasts. There are so many ways to communicate. Learn how to set up a class blog and build a homepage on a subject of your choice. Suggest ways to improve your school website, and hopefully the headteacher will listen to your ideas. Discover the movers and shakers in the world of technology, the people who’ve shaped the modern world. Perhaps you might be a visionary for the next generation. Build robots and circuits, break codes and investigate gadgets galore. Why not write a thriller narrative in the style of Anthony Horowitz? Then, on request from MI99, build a website for a new Spy School. What pages will it need? One for gadgets? A secret lunch menu? You decide. Let’s start today on Tomorrow’s World.

Linked text: Stormbreaker – Anthony Horowitz

As well as our topic, the children will develop their Football and Swimming in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our children are excited that all their hard work and preparations for the SATs will continue in preparation for Year 6 and 7 alike; extra-curricular clubs are on Tuesday and Wednesdays will continue to the end of the year. All children in Class 5 are encouraged to join in the fun on these After-School Clubs.

Homework will be issued weekly. Spellings and Times Tables will be issued on Wednesday and returned ready for a test on Mondays. Either Literacy, Numeracy or Science will be issued on Mondays, to be returned on Fridays. To continue all our hard work to develop our Remote Learning, we are encouraging our children to access their homework via DB Primary and upload their homework onto the MY WORK section by the Friday deadline – paper copies will still be distributed if necessary. We are trying to encourage our children to read daily, asking parents / carers to give a brief comment in their reading diary. Please ensure that your child returns their reading book to school daily.

Class 5 will have PE on Wednesday and Fridays this half term, with swimming being on Thursday mornings. Please ensure your child has their PE kits in school on Monday morning, and leave it in school for the whole week. We will send PE kits home on Fridays. All swimming kits are to come into school on Thursday morning and will be sent home on the Thursday night.

Please feel free to contact me with any queries; I genuinely believe that a happy child is the result of outstanding home / school links.

Cornerstones Curriculum Summer Term 1 – Class 5

I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing Easter holiday and are ready for the next 5 weeks. During the Summer 1st half term in Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our next topic – Alchemy Island!

It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island. Can you find the gold hidden deep within the island’s mysterious landscape? The only way is to study the map, unravel the riddle and begin your adventure. On the way, you must do all you can to learn about gold and master the ancient art of alchemy. Be creative and try to impress the island’s team of ace alchemists. Will they praise your scientific expertise? What if there were a video game version of Alchemy Island? Could you compose a stunning soundtrack to bring this mysterious landscape to life? You’ve got your map, coordinates and everything else you need to make your way across Alchemy Island. Don’t forget to pack your imagination. Got your suitcase ready? Then let the journey begin.

As well as our topic, the children will develop their Athletics and Tennis in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our children are excited that all their hard work and preparations for the upcoming SATs will come to fruition; SATs week beginning Monday 9th May. Extra-curricular clubs are on Tuesday and Wednesdays. All children in Class 5 are encouraged to join in the fun on these After-School Clubs.

Homework will be issued weekly. Spellings and Times Tables will be issued on Wednesday and returned ready for a test on Mondays. Parent information

We’re going on a magical journey to find the gold hidden somewhere on Alchemy Island.

This half term, a mysterious visitor will arrive to present us with artefacts from the island. Reading stories set in fantasy worlds will inspire our story openings. We’ll manipulate digital photographs, adding fantastical special effects. Our geography skills will improve as we look closely at maps of Alchemy Island, plotting routes and using coordinates. We’ll examine samples from the island, explore the properties of materials and experiment with changes of state. If we’re going to find gold, we’d better find out all about it! In English we’ll write soliloquies and poems inspired by the island’s magical powers and dramatic landscape. The coding programme Scratch will help us to plot and correct errors in our route, and we’ll use technology to create beautiful digital images. We’ll compose raps and use sound effects and mood music to reflect the atmosphere on Alchemy Island.

At the end of the project, we’ll perform songs about our amazing adventure and present what we have learned. We’ll design a map for a new app and a board game based on our adventures.

Help your child prepare for their project
Start your mysterious journey to Alchemy Island at home! Why not investigate foods together that change state when they are heated or cooled? You could also visit the library to find a book to read together which is set in a fantasy world. Alternatively, create a map of your own fantasy island – what landmarks will you include?

Memorable experience Chief Alchemist’s riddle
Innovate challenge Game soundtrack
English Fantasy narratives; Non-chronological reports; Soliloquies; Poetry; Lyrics
Music Composing; Recording and editing software; Music; Graphic scores
Computing Photography; Debugging programs; Gaming
D&T Electrical circuits; Designing a board game
Geography Map reading; Using coordinates; Human and physical features
Science Properties and changes of materials; Working scientifically
Science investigations Can you clean dirty water? Do all solids dissolve? Will it erupt? Which materials conduct heat?

PE – Masquerade – 11.1.22

UNCRC Article 28 (right to education)

What fabulous efforts all of the children in Class 5 displayed today; our core task for our new PE topic in dance with Gemma from SSCo. We can’t wait to see your skills develop during the term and to showcase your final routine. Well done Class 5.

Cornerstones Curriculum Enhancement (Memorable Experience) – Off With Her Head

What a brilliant day we have had: our Memorable Experience for our new Cornerstones Curriculum topic – Off With Her Head (OWHH) – with our favourite author Adam Bushnell.

We looked at dragons which Henry VIII believed to represent strength, and added a variety of other animals to create a new dangerous species! Adam then retold the story when a stranger from far away killed a mythical beast by turning it to stone, and sold it to Henry VIII for a huge sum of money… this stone head was mounted on the top of Hampton Court where it is still visible today😳

Well done to everyone who truly demonstrated their Rights Respecting Gold ethos.

Spring Term 1 2022

Happy New Year; I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing Christmas holiday and are ready for the next 7 weeks. During the Spring 1st half term in Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our next topic – Off with her Head!

What sort of man would order the beheading of his own wife? Was she really that bad?

The children will travel back in time to the 1500s and meet the terrifying Tudors, a domineering dynasty that changed our history.

We will discover an opulent court where dancing and singing goes hand in hand with swift falls from favour – and even sweeter falling of heads!

We will flex our detective muscles and become criminal investigators! Will you find out the facts or will the evidence from the past bemuse you? How will you find the accused…innocent or guilty?

As well as our topic, the children will develop their dance in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our children are excited to continue their preparations for the upcoming SATs, extra-curricular clubs are on Tuesday and Wednesdays.

Class 5 will have PE on Tuesday and Wednesdays this half term. Please ensure your child has their PE kits in school on Monday morning and leave it in school for the whole week. We will send PE kits home on Fridays.

Please feel free to contact me with any queries; I genuinely believe that a happy child is the result of outstanding home / school links.

Kind regards

Mr. Graham

Hola Mexico – DT – 9.12.21

Cornerstones Curriculum – Class 5

Design Technology – Food

UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)

What a fabulous way to share our Cornerstones topic with the rest of the school. The children of Class 5 worked with our school cook to design a menu based on Mexico and created the perfect meal for all children and staff.
Well done to everyone involved and we all hope today has inspired you to try new foods at home.

A Rights Respecting Gold day for all our wonderful children.

KS2 Pantomime in a Day

UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)

Huge thank you to Matt from Big Foot Arts, who spent the day working with our Key Stage 2 children to create a ‘play in a day’ – an amazing retell of The Grinch 🙂

All of the rest of the school watched and it was truly amazing – well done 🙂

Science Enquiry

UNCRC Article 28 (right to education)

A super science lesson today where we explored how plants reproduce and how new plants are created.

Well done Class 5 on your fabulous Rights Respecting Gold attitude once again 👍

Children In Need 2021

A massive thank you to everyone who donated to our CIN day. We have had lots of fun joining in spotty dressing up, Joe Wicks movement classes, Pudsey biscuits for lunch, hoopla competitions and beat the teachers!

A great big thank you to the SSOCs and sports leaders who made the day run smoothly.

We managed to raise £74 👏

Here is what Lacie-Mae (SSOCs) had to say ….

For children in need day we had so much fun doing a hoopla game. We did it to raise money for children in need to help them if they need things.

What we did … we got each class in turn. First we got class 1 and we did the team games. Red v blue then yellow v green. Then the winners played each other, right up to class 5.

We got 2 hoops and used them. In KS2 you weren’t allowed to let go of hands and you had to get your full body through the hoops but for KS1 you were allowed to let go of hands.

The prize was a sweet for the class winner and the winner out of all the teams got a chocolate bar and played the teachers. The teachers won 🙁

Article 31 – join in a range of activities.

Professor Brainstorm

UNCRC Article 28 (right to education)

We have had so much fun learning all about magic today …… well that’s what we thought! Professor Brainstorm showed us how incredible science is and how much fun we can have investigating.

PE – Rugby

UNCRC Article 28 (right to education)

Another fantastic rugby lesson today where our Rights Respecting Gold children organised small sided invasion games for rugby.

It is an absolute pleasure to see your leadership skills develop. Well done Class 5.

Crisis Support Sleep Over – 12.11.21

UNCRC Article 27 (adequate standard of living)

What an experience we have all just had – a sleep over with a difference!

In support to our Charity – Crisis Support – our children spent the night in school sleeping on the hall floor to re-enact what it would be like if we were to be homeless. The children made shelters from cardboard boxes, ate soup from the soup kitchen and made clothing from plastic bags. This has been a real eye-opener for the children, who all demonstrated their Rights Respecting Ethos in how they conducted themselves throughout the evening. Well done Class 5; you have shone once again.

Hola Mexico – Engagement – 11.11.21

UNCRC Article 28 (right to education)

What a fabulous day we have had sampling all things Mexico! As part of the Engagement for our new Cornerstones Curriculum topic – Hola Mexico –  the children from Class 5 spent the afternoon tasting a variety of Mexican foods that would have been eaten during the Ancient Maya up to the current times. The smells from the classroom were fantastic and it was so pleasing to hear that the children were so inspired by their new tastes, they went home and encouraged their own adults to make Mexican foods.

We can’t wait for the rest of the topic.

Well done Class 5.

Cornerstones Curriculum Autumn Term 2 – Class 5

Dear Parent / Carer,

I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing half term and are ready for the next 7 weeks. During the Autumn 2nd half term in Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our next topic – Hola Mexico.

Welcome to Mexico! The children will explore this unique country, from its towering temples and stunning geography to its pulsing rhythms and fun-packed festivals.

Tummy rumbling? The children will concoct a traditional fruit cocktail, or a delicious Mexican Meal. What’s on your shopping list? Go steady with the spices!

We will also discover the mysterious world of the ancient Maya civilisation, make their chocolate, learn their poetry, play their ball game and follow all their curious rituals.

Feel like celebrating? The children will design a Mexican skull, grab a drum, join a tribe and make some noise! Have we got what it takes to be a chief? Let’s find out…

As well as our topic, the children will develop their rugby in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our children are excited to continue their preparations for the upcoming SATs, extra-curricular clubs are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with the Football Club continuing for those enrolled from last term. All children in Class 5 are encouraged to participate in the SAT Clubs.

Homework will be issued weekly. Spellings will be issued on Wednesday and returned ready for a test on Mondays.

Class 5 will have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays this half term. Please ensure your child has their PE kits in school on Monday morning and leave it in school for the whole week. We will send PE kits home on Fridays.

Please feel free to contact me with any queries; I genuinely believe that a happy child is the result of outstanding home / school links, and I am looking forward to meeting you.

Kind Regards

Mr. Graham

Autumn Term 1

Cornerstones Curriculum Showcase – 22.10.21

UNCRC Article 38 (war and armed conflicts)

What a lovely way to finish our Cornerstones Curriculum Fallen Fields topic this term – a Street Party to celebrate the end of World War 1.

The children made bunting to string across the classroom,  wreaths and poppies to remember those who made the biggest sacrifice whilst serving their country, ate party food from WW1 (1918) whilst listening to wartime music.

Well done to all children in Class 5 – you really are fabulous and demonstrated your Rights Respecting Gold ethos across the entire term.

Walk n Talk Session 6 – 22.10.21

UNCRC Article 28 (right to education)

What a fabulous way to finish our Walk n Talk program with Darren; the children utilised their leadership skills and organised all activities learned during the previous 5 weeks and participated in an 8 activity carousel. Teamwork, encouragement, dedication to succeed were just a few of the Sainsbury Skills the children needed to show to successfully complete their goals. Well done Class 5 on another brilliant Rights Respecting Gold mindset throughout.

Engagement – Cornerstones Curriculum – UNCRC Article 38 (war and armed conflicts)

What an unbelievable day we have all had in Class 5: we were lucky enough to experience first hand the Prisoner of War Camp (PoW), Eden Camp. We explored each hut and researched what it was like during wartime in Britain. Eden Camp not only covers our Cornerstones Curriculum ‘Fallen Fields’, but all conflicts to present date. It was a truly moving day and our children showed just why we believe they are Rights Respecting Gold – a brilliant day by all. Well done Class 5.

Walk n Talk – Recovery and Adjustment to Change

UNCRC Article 23 (children with a disability)

Today in our first week on the Walk n Talk program, we met Alex Dewar: he was in the army when he suffered a brain injury. We learnt that Alex has had to bravely re-build his life after his injury and a big part of this was physical fitness. What a truly inspirational individual Alex was in school. He even shared his Invictus Games medals that he won. We just loved having you in and can’t wait to share your inspiration with others. Thank you Alex.

Well done Class 5.

Memorable Experience – UNCRC Article 28 (right to education)

We have just experienced a truly excellent session with the inspirational illustrator and artist – Liz Million. She taught us how to draw characters from wartime scenes and linked her artwork to our Cornerstones Curriculum Fallen Fields.

Another example of Rights Respecting Gold from our brilliant children.

Welcome to Class 5

Dear Parent / Carer,

I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing summer holiday and are ready for the year ahead; welcome to Class 5 – Year 5 and 6.

In Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our new topic – Fallen Fields…

The Sun sets on the battlefields of France and solitary bugle sounds the Last Post.

Known as ‘the war to end all wars’ the First World War was a conflict that had a devastating effect on millions of people across the world.

What started this global tragedy? What was life like for families on the home front as they waited for news of loved ones who were ‘missing in action’? How did the soldiers endure the terrible conditions in the trenches? How was a fragile peace finally achieved?

We will always remember the fallen.

As well as our topic, the children will develop their gymnastics in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our Year 6 children are excited to start their preparations for the upcoming SATs, and an extra-curricular club has been organised to start on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from week beginning (wb: 20th September 2021). All children in Class 5 will be encouraged to join in the fun on these After-School Clubs.

Class 5 will have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child has their PE kits in school on Monday morning and leave it in school for the whole week. We will send PE kits home on Fridays.

I am really looking forward to working with your child and getting to know them throughout the year. Please feel free to contact me with any queries; I genuinely believe that a happy child is the result of outstanding home / school links, and I am looking forward to meeting you.

Kind Regards

Mr. Graham
