Cornerstones Curriculum Summer Term 2 – Class 5
I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing half-term and are ready for the next 7 weeks. During the Summer 2nd half term in Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our next topic – Tomorrow’s World!
Text messages, emails, websites, blogs and podcasts. There are so many ways to communicate. Learn how to set up a class blog and build a homepage on a subject of your choice. Suggest ways to improve your school website, and hopefully the headteacher will listen to your ideas. Discover the movers and shakers in the world of technology, the people who’ve shaped the modern world. Perhaps you might be a visionary for the next generation. Build robots and circuits, break codes and investigate gadgets galore. Why not write a thriller narrative in the style of Anthony Horowitz? Then, on request from MI99, build a website for a new Spy School. What pages will it need? One for gadgets? A secret lunch menu? You decide. Let’s start today on Tomorrow’s World.
Linked text: Stormbreaker – Anthony Horowitz
As well as our topic, the children will develop their Football and Swimming in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our children are excited that all their hard work and preparations for the SATs will continue in preparation for Year 6 and 7 alike; extra-curricular clubs are on Tuesday and Wednesdays will continue to the end of the year. To continue all our hard work to develop our Remote Learning, we are encouraging our children to access their homework via DB Primary and upload their homework onto the MY WORK section by the Friday deadline – paper copies will still be distributed if necessary. We are trying to encourage our children to read daily, asking parents / carers to give a brief comment in their reading diary. Please ensure that your child returns their reading book to school daily.
Class 5 will have PE on Wednesday and Fridays this half term, with swimming being on Thursday mornings. Please ensure your child has their PE kits in school on Monday morning, and leave it in school for the whole week. We will send PE kits home on Fridays. All swimming kits are to come into school on Thursday morning and will be sent home on the Thursday night.
Please feel free to contact me with any queries; I genuinely believe that a happy child is the result of outstanding home / school links.

Cornerstones Curriculum Summer Term 1 – Class 5
I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing Easter holiday and are ready for the next 5 weeks. During the Summer 1st half term in Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our next topic – Alchemy Island!
It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island. Can you find the gold hidden deep within the island’s mysterious landscape? The only way is to study the map, unravel the riddle and begin your adventure. On the way, you must do all you can to learn about gold and master the ancient art of alchemy. Be creative and try to impress the island’s team of ace alchemists. Will they praise your scientific expertise? What if there were a video game version of Alchemy Island? Could you compose a stunning soundtrack to bring this mysterious landscape to life? You’ve got your map, coordinates and everything else you need to make your way across Alchemy Island. Don’t forget to pack your imagination. Got your suitcase ready? Then let the journey begin.
As well as our topic, the children will develop their Athletics and Tennis in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our children are excited that all their hard work and preparations for the upcoming SATs will come to fruition; SATs week beginning Monday 9th May. Extra-curricular clubs are on Tuesday and Wednesdays. All children in Class 5 are encouraged to join in the fun on these After-School Clubs.

Parent information
We’re going on a magical journey to find the gold hidden somewhere on Alchemy Island.
This half term, a mysterious visitor will arrive to present us with artefacts from the island. Reading stories set in fantasy worlds will inspire our story openings. We’ll manipulate digital photographs, adding fantastical special effects. Our geography skills will improve as we look closely at maps of Alchemy Island, plotting routes and using coordinates. We’ll examine samples from the island, explore the properties of materials and experiment with changes of state. If we’re going to find gold, we’d better find out all about it! In English we’ll write soliloquies and poems inspired by the island’s magical powers and dramatic landscape. The coding programme Scratch will help us to plot and correct errors in our route, and we’ll use technology to create beautiful digital images. We’ll compose raps and use sound effects and mood music to reflect the atmosphere on Alchemy Island.
At the end of the project, we’ll perform songs about our amazing adventure and present what we have learned. We’ll design a map for a new app and a board game based on our adventures.
Help your child prepare for their project
Start your mysterious journey to Alchemy Island at home! Why not investigate foods together that change state when they are heated or cooled? You could also visit the library to find a book to read together which is set in a fantasy world. Alternatively, create a map of your own fantasy island – what landmarks will you include?

A great big thank you to the SSOCs and sports leaders who made the day run smoothly.
We managed to raise £74 👏
Here is what Lacie-Mae (SSOCs) had to say ….
For children in need day we had so much fun doing a hoopla game. We did it to raise money for children in need to help them if they need things.
What we did … we got each class in turn. First we got class 1 and we did the team games. Red v blue then yellow v green. Then the winners played each other, right up to class 5.
We got 2 hoops and used them. In KS2 you weren’t allowed to let go of hands and you had to get your full body through the hoops but for KS1 you were allowed to let go of hands.
The prize was a sweet for the class winner and the winner out of all the teams got a chocolate bar and played the teachers. The teachers won 🙁

The children made bunting to string across the classroom, wreaths and poppies to remember those who made the biggest sacrifice whilst serving their country, ate party food from WW1 (1918) whilst listening to wartime music.
Well done to all children in Class 5 – you really are fabulous and demonstrated your Rights Respecting Gold ethos across the entire term.

Teamwork, encouragement, dedication to succeed were just a few of the Sainsbury Skills the children needed to show to successfully complete their goals. Well done Class 5 on another brilliant Rights Respecting Gold mindset throughout.

“Keep the Home-Fires Burning (Till the Boys Come Home)” is a British patriotic First World War song composed in 1914 by Ivor Novello with words by Lena Guilbert Ford (whose middle name was sometimes printed as “Gilbert”). Engagement – Cornerstones Curriculum – UNCRC Article 38 (war and armed conflicts)
What an unbelievable day we have all had in Class 5: we were lucky enough to experience first hand the Prisoner of War Camp (PoW), Eden Camp. We explored each hut and researched what it was like during wartime in Britain. Eden Camp not only covers our Cornerstones Curriculum ‘Fallen Fields’, but all conflicts to present date. It was a truly moving day and our children showed just why we believe they are Rights Respecting Gold – a brilliant day by all. Well done Class 5.
Walk n Talk – Recovery and Adjustment to Change
UNCRC Article 23 (children with a disability)
Today in our first week on the Walk n Talk program, we met Alex Dewar: he was in the army when he suffered a brain injury. We learnt that Alex has had to bravely re-build his life after his injury and a big part of this was physical fitness. What a truly inspirational individual Alex was in school. He even shared his Invictus Games medals that he won. We just loved having you in and can’t wait to share your inspiration with others. Thank you Alex.
Literacy – Roald Dahl Day – UNCRC Article 29 (goals of education)

Welcome to Class 5
Dear Parent / Carer,
I hope that you have all had a wonderful, relaxing summer holiday and are ready for the year ahead; welcome to Class 5 – Year 5 and 6.
In Class 5, we are looking forward to learning about our new topic – Fallen Fields…
The Sun sets on the battlefields of France and solitary bugle sounds the Last Post.
Known as ‘the war to end all wars’ the First World War was a conflict that had a devastating effect on millions of people across the world.
What started this global tragedy? What was life like for families on the home front as they waited for news of loved ones who were ‘missing in action’? How did the soldiers endure the terrible conditions in the trenches? How was a fragile peace finally achieved?
We will always remember the fallen.
As well as our topic, the children will develop their gymnastics in PE, as well as enhancing our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Our Year 6 children are excited to start their preparations for the upcoming SATs, and an extra-curricular club has been organised to start on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from week beginning (wb: 20th September 2021). All children in Class 5 will be encouraged to join in the fun on these After-School Clubs.
Homework will be issued weekly. Spellings and Times Tables will be issued on Wednesday and returned ready for a test on Mondays. Either Literacy, Numeracy or Science will be issued on Mondays, to be returned on Fridays.
Class 5 will have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your child has their PE kits in school on Monday morning and leave it in school for the whole week. We will send PE kits home on Fridays.
I am really looking forward to working with your child and getting to know them throughout the year. Please feel free to contact me with any queries; I genuinely believe that a happy child is the result of outstanding home / school links, and I am looking forward to meeting you.
Kind Regards
Mr. Graham
